Moffat brothers finish 12th in mens doubles on Saturday night in Calgary.

CALGARY - Italy’s Armin Zöggeler, the man with the straightest posture, clinched his eighth career World Cup overall title in luge and Canadian coach Wolfgang Staudinger said he got caught with his pants down Saturday at Canada Olympic Park.

Zöggeler, the reigning Olympic champion, posted a two-run time of one minute 30.375 at the Viessman World Cup in Calgary.

Nicknamed “Il Cannibale” on the circuit, the 35-year-old policeman from Vollan-Lana clinched the season title with one race remaining in Whistler, B.C., next week.

“It was a good season to win five races,” Zöggeler said. “It’s not the track for me, but it’s a good day for me. I had two runs that were maybe perfect. Today I’m very happy.”

World champion Felix Loch of Germany was second in 1:30.690 and Russian Albert Demtschenko was third in 1:30.796.

Jeff Christie was the top Canadian in 17th, followed by Sam Edney in 24th, Brendan Hauptman in 26th and Ian Cockerline in 29th. All are from Calgary except Hauptman, who is part of the B.C. Sport initiative to recruit athletes within the province leading to Vancouver 2010

Staudinger, who came to the Canadian team two years ago from the German national squad, said he was fooled by the frosty conditions at the COP track when it came to setting up the men’s sleds.

“Calgary is usually a dry place where we never have frost,” Staudinger said. “Usually we have wind. In Calgary, honest to God, I’ve never seen it and I got caught with my pants down.

Christie didn’t blame his sled set-up, but Staudinger did. He felt Christie slid well enough to finish in the top 10. The last opportunity to adjust the sled is about one hour before the race.

“Jeff and Sam did a good job. Small mistakes and it’s absolutely not their fault,” Staudinger said. “It just shows how much on the edge we are working and if you don’t nail it down 100 per cent . . . it just shows it’s an outside sport and that’s to be learned from.”

Zöggeler, the Olympic champion in both 2002 and 2006, is closing in on the record of 10 overall World Cup titles held by Markus Prock of Austria. Even though COP isn’t his favourite track, he was silky smooth sliding down it.

“This is just a display of luge art,” Staudinger said. “You don’t see any motion on the sled. He’s always got the best position, the best aerodynamics and he’s got the experience to respond, especially in a race like today, he knows exactly what to do.”

Zoeggeler is a favourite to win gold on the Whistler track both next week and a year from now at the Olympic Games.

ALEX GOUGH HITS ANOTHER MILESTONE IN QUEST FOR PODIUM

CALGARY - Canada’s Alex Gough hit another milestone in her quest for the international podium after posting her career-best World Cup result, finishing sixth on her home track in Calgary on Friday evening.

The 21-year-old Gough, who made history last week when she posted the best-ever result for a Canadian at the World Championships when she finished fourth, clocked a two-run time of one minute 35.622 seconds.

I am a little disappointed because I didn’t slide the top section very well, but of course I have to be happy because that was my best World Cup result, said Gough at the finish dock. The mantra is to have two consistent runs, and that is what I try to do every week.

The Calgarian’s breakthrough season has included six top-10 finishes. Gough’s previous best result this year on the World Cup was seventh which she accomplished twice.

I do really believe now that if I have those consistent runs that I can be in that elite group with the top-six, said Gough sporting a FOR SALE sign flashing on her race helmet, which the entire Canadian squad is wearing during the World Cup races over the next two weeks in hopes of finding a corporate partner. My starts are my biggest disadvantage, but I am now competitive and need to keep working on improving them if I want to get on the podium.

American Erin Hamlin ends German’s 11-year luge winning streak on home track in New York

LAKE PLACID, N.Y.—Canada’s Alex Gough added another chapter to a story book season on Friday after finishing fourth at the Luge World Championships in Lake Placid, N.Y.

The 21-year-old Calgarian, who sat in fifth spot after the opening run, showed the poise of a wily veteran after putting down one of the fastest runs of the second and final heat to post the best-ever World Championship result in the history of the Canadian luge program. Gough’s clocked a two run time of 1:28.615.

“I am absolutely thrilled,” said Gough following the awards ceremony, who struggled in training this week. “I had two of my best runs of the week. I just told myself at the beginning of the day – this is sport, have fun and put it down and I did.”

Struggling to crack the top-15 on the Luge World Cup during the first three years of her career, Gough has blazed a trail to the top of the international standings this season with five top-10 finishes, including two seventh-place results.

“I have had a lot of breakthroughs that are beyond just my results by figuring out different aerodynamics and things,” said Gough. “But the key is I have gained a lot of confidence this season and now being so close to the podium, I am really hungry to get there. I’ll definitely be going for it over the next two races but I’m not getting ahead of myself and will treat them like any other race.”

Earlier this season, Gough’s head coach, Wolfgang Staudinger, compared her sliding style to the legendary German athlete, Sylke Otto. While still years younger than her World Cup opponents, Gough has been a model of consistency over the first eight races this season.

“I just feel that I’m starting to figure it out and I think it shows if we follow what Staudie (Wolfgang Staudinger) says, then we will have good results,” said Gough earlier this season. “You don’t have to be perfect, but with two consistent runs and fast starts we can slide with the best. Our team believes the Germans who have been dominant for so long are now within striking distance.”

Erin Hamlin, of the United States, proved that is definitely true. The American ended one of the longest winning streaks in competitive sports by taking the World Championship title on her home track in Lake Placid. Sitting in first after the opening run, Hamlin saved her best for last when she slid to a track record in her second run at 43.985, and a combined winning time of 1:28.098.

Heading into Friday’s race, the German women had won more than 85 consecutive World Cup, World Championship and Olympic races that began in 1997.

Natalie Geisenberger, of Germany, was forced to settle for second spot at 1:28.285, while Natalia Yakushenko, of the Ukraine, was in the bronze medal position on the podium at 1:28.334.

Two other Canadian women also suited up in the World Championships. Regan Lauscher, of Red Deer, Alta., who continues to rebuild after double-shoulder surgery earlier this year, to finish in 15th (1:29.676), while Calgary’s Meaghan Simister was 18th (1:29.813).

Earlier in the day, the world’s top doubles luge athletes also competed. Chris and Mike Moffat, of Calgary, finished as the top Canadians in 10th spot at 1:29.007.

Gerhard Plankensteiner and Oswald Haselrieder, of Italy, won the World Championship doubles title with a two-run time of 1:27.401.

The World Championships continue on Saturday with the men’s singles races.

CANADIAN LUGE ATHLETES SLIDE INTO TOP-15 AT WORLD CUP IN ALTENBERG

Chris and Mike Moffat finish ninth in doubles, Alex Gough 10th, Sam Edney settles in 13th

ALTENBERG, Ger. – The four Canadian luge athletes who teamed up to win Canada a silver medal in the team competition earlier this week, all slid into the top-15 at the Luge World Cup in Altenberg, Germany over the weekend.

Calgary’s 24-year-old Sam Edney enjoyed one of his strongest performances of the year in men’s singles on Sunday. Edney finished as the top Canuck after sliding into 13th spot with a time of one minute 51.561 seconds. Edney just over one second off the winning time of 1:50.344 set by Italy’s Armin Zöggeler. Germany’s Felix Loch (1:50.527) and David Möller (1:50.536) grabbed the final two spots on the podium respectively.

That was an extremely tight mens race and we are now holding strong in a pack of athletes between sixth and 18th spot, said Wolfgang Staudinger as the team was on the road travelling to Frankfurt, Germany. Right now we are very consistent which took a year, but for us to escape this group, our starts need to get quicker and we need to start taking more risks.

In men’s doubles action it was Canada’s Canada’s Chris and Mike Moffat who also enjoyed their best result of the season with a ninth-place finish. Continuing to build strength in their start following an off-season wrist injury sustained by Chris, the older of the two Calgary brothers, the Canadian duo clocked a two-run time of 1:25.897.

Christian Oberstolz and Patric Gruber, of Italy, won their fourth World Cup of the season after driving to the top of the podium with a time of 1:24.996. Patrick Leitner and Alexander Resch, of Germany, were second (1:25.070), while Austria’s Andreas Linger and Wolfgang Linger rounded out the podium with a time of 1:25.096.

Meanwhile, Canada’s 21-year-old Alex Gough continues to enjoy her dream season of her own as a new regular in the top-10 against the top athletes in the world. The Calgarian finished 10th again on Saturday in women’s singles after clocking a time of 1:47.559.

Gough was joined by Regan Lauscher, of Red Deer, Alta., and Meaghan SImister, of Calgary, who finished 13th (1:47.929) and 20th (1:48.997) respectively.

The German women had little troubles defending their home track after taking the top-four spots in the standings. Natalie Geisenberger slid to the gold after posting a time of 1:46.283, while Tatjana Hüfner was second (1:46.421), while Anke Wischnewski completed the sweep of the podium in third (1:46.863). Corinna Martini, of Germany, finished fourth.

The Canadian Luge Team will now head to North America for the final three events of the season, which begins with the World Championships at Lake Placid, N.Y., February 6-8.

CANADA’S LUGE ATHLETES BRING HOME SOME SILVER HARDWARE AFTER FINISHING SECOND IN TEAM COMPETITION

ALTENBERG, Ger. – Canada’s luge team joined forces to win a silver medal in a World Cup team relay on Friday in Altenberg, Germany.

Canada’s team consisting of Calgary’s Alex Gough, Sam Edney and brother tandem of Chris and Mike Moffat, finished second behind the nearly untouchable Germans after blowing down the challenging 15-cure Altenberg track. The Canucks took advantage of familiar windy conditions regularly experienced on their home track in Calgary to finish .748 seconds behind the Germans.

It was an exciting day and I just wanted to put it all out there and really enjoy it, said Sam Edney, who was competing in his first-ever World Cup relay. It is definitely a unique experience and it is completely unpredictable because any mistake by any team member can cost you. I think this is the future of our sport, and creating a team concept in a sport that is very individual, will make it that much more exciting.

The team competition consists of one female, one male and one doubles teams, who each complete one run for a combined final time. In an effort to make the event more exciting for the teams and spectators, the FIL introduced the relay-type system that had the athletes hitting a pad at the finish, which in turn opens the gate at the start for the next team member. Strategy comes into play as the coaches communicate over radio to make sure the next athlete is ready to go as soon as the get opens.

This is very important measuring stick for us because it demonstrates the overall performance of a nation, and we are always right in the hunt for the medals in the team event, said Wolfgang Staudinger, who added the International Luge Federation has been trying to get the team format into the Olympic lineup in the future. This result shows if we slide well we are capable of doing great things.

Canada has enjoyed great success in the team format. Two years ago the Canadians finished second overall on the World Cup after winning a silver and bronze medal. Earlier this season, the Canadian juniors also won a silver medal in a team relay in Königssee, Germany.

The powerful German team of David Möller, Natalie Geisenberger, along with Tobias Wendl and Tobias Alt set the time to beat at 2:26.737.

Italy’s David Mair, Sandra Gasparini and Christian Oberstolz and Patrick Gruber won the bronze medal.

The Luge World Cup continues Saturday with the double’s and women’s competition.

Germans sweep podium, Gough finishes 15th while Lauscher settles in 16th

OBERHOF, Ger. – Canada’s Meaghan Simister found her way back into the top-10 after another steady race at the Luge World Cup in Oberhof, Germany on Sunday. The 22-year-old Calgarian, who is one of the strongest athletes on the international circuit, exploded out of the start handles to chart two of the fastest start times of the day. Simister, who finished ninth at last year’s World Championships on the challenging Oberhof track, made a number of minor mistakes but settled for a 10th-place finish at one minute 28.147.

“I am really not looking at results right now but trying to focus on putting two consistent runs together. I am racing the way I’m training so I have to be happy,” said Simister, who is admittedly tired while coming to the end of a long journey around European tracks. “I am still developing and I know I can continue to improve. We are looking forward to competing next week in Altenberg and then returning home.”

Two other Canadians joined Simister in Germany. Calgary’s Alex Gough, who has posted career-best results over the last month, squeaked her way into the final spot in the top-15 on Sunday. Gough clocked-in at 1:28.258. Regan Lauscher, of Red Deer, Alta., who is one of Canada’s most consistent sliders, continued her comeback into top form after double shoulder surgery. Lauscher, who has little strength in her starts, finished 16th at 1:28.277.

The German women had another ho hum week sweeping the World Cup podium. Tatjana Hüfner finished on top at 1:26.493. Natalie Geisenberger finished in second spot at 1:26.621, while Anke Wischnewski completed the sweep in third (1:27.108).

The Canadian Luge Team now heads to Altenberg, Germany for the final event in Europe before returning to North America.

Canada’s Kim McRae wins bronze medal at Junior Luge World Cup

Oberhof, Ger. – Jeff Christie was en route to posting his best World Cup luge finish of the season, but Mother Nature had other things in mind, forcing the Canadian to settle for 13th-spot in Oberhof, Germany on Saturday. The 25-year-old was sitting in the top-10 after the opening heat, but heavy rain which turned to snow, derailed many of the world’s best luge athletes and opened the door to the podium for those with early start positions in the second run. Christie clocked a two-run time of one minute 31.798 seconds.

“We were at the mercy of the weather today,” said Wolfgang Staudinger, head coach, Canadian Luge Team, who added Jan Eichorn, the race winner started early in the second heat and stormed to the top of the leaderboard before the weather rolled in. “Jeff actually had a couple of rough runs, but he was in the mix and there was nothing we could do with the conditions.”

Christie’s World Cup and Olympic teammates, Sam Edney and Ian Cockerline, also suited up on Saturday. The Calgarians finished 19th (1:31.908) and 31st (1:33.06) respectively.

Germany’s Jan Eichorn won the lottery with a slow opening run to take advantage of ideal conditions in his final trip down the 14-curve 1,130-metre track. Eichorn clocked the winning time at 1:31.377 to lead the German sweep of the podium. Felix Loch was second (1:31.412), while David Möller joined his mates in third (1:31.494).

Canada’s Chris and Mike Moffat continue to build their strength back after an off-season injury to compete with the world’s best double luge athletes. The Calgary brothers finished middle of the pack in 12th after clocking a two-run time of 1:27.248.

Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt, of Germany, won the men’s doubles race with a time of 1:26.169.

Meanwhile, a group of young Canucks enjoyed another strong weekend on Junior Luge World Cup down the road in Altenberg, Germany. Calgary’s Kim McRae captured the bronze medal in the Youth A women’s division after clocking a two-run time of 1:23.941. Luzie Löscher, of Germany, won the race with a time of 1:23.219. Calgary’s Elena Corrigall narrowly missed the podium in fourth-place (1:23.995).

“Kim’s results this weekend is an excellent achievement on a track where she crashed last year,” said Walter Corey, high-performance director, Canadian Luge Association. “I know she took the challenge to improve that result and it is great to see. Being able to medal in the youth category is a strong step forward for her future and she is one of a great group that is building a strong junior luge program Canada.”

The Luge World Cup continues on Sunday with the women’s singles races.

ALEX GOUGH READY TO STING LIKE A BEE WHILE CRACKING TOP-10 AGAIN ON LUGE WORLD CUP

Chris and Mike Moffat finish 11th in World Cup doubles racing

In CESANA, Ita. – Canada’s Alex Gough is proof success stimulates success in high-performance sport. The 21-year-old Calgarian, who struggled to find her way into the top-15 last year, has bolted her way up the international rankings and posted her third top-10 performance of the year with her second career-best seventh-place finish this season – this time on the Olympic track in Cesena, Italy on Saturday.

“It is so rewarding to have all of the hard work start to pay off and it definitely makes me hungry for more,” said Gough after clocking a two run time of 1:35.383.

Gough’s seventh-place finish also made her the first Canadian to beat one of the dominant German sliders in a race this season after posting one of the fastest times of the day in the second heat.

“I just feel that I’m starting to figure it out and our team believes the Germans who have been dominant for so long are now within striking distance,” said Gough. “I think it shows if we follow what Staudie (Wolfgang Staudinger) says, then we will have good results. You don’t have to be perfect, but with two consistent runs and fast starts we can slide with the best.”

Gough, along with the rest of the Canadian team has been a work in progress since new head coach Wolfgang Staudinger took over control of the national team from Germany more than a year ago.

“Alex is doing really well and has the potential to sting like a bee out here on the World Cup,” said Staudinger, who compared Gough’s sliding style to the legendary German slider, Sylke Otto. “We have a structure in place and this shows the system works. She is the first sign of success from all of the hard work we have been doing, but we cannot go crazy either and have to continue to work hard. I said when I started. I’m not creating miracles. We are going to follow the system and the system will work.”

Gough was joined in the women’s race by two other Canadians. Calgary’s Meaghan Simister, who also posted some of the strongest results of her career prior to the holiday break, finished in 14th spot (1:36.063). Regan Lauscher, who had surgery to both of her shoulders in the off-season, continues to rebuild her strength to slide back into the elite pack on the World Cup. The Red Deer, Alta. native posted a combined time of 1:36.183 to put her in 15th place.

“We now have nice internal competition within our team and shows all of the athletes that if we do the job, good things are possible,” said Staudinger, who also enforced the importance of the Canadian team needing access to a rebuilt start ramp in the Ice House at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary to give the team a competitive advantage over the rest of the world. “We are moving in the right direction, but need to continue to hold onto the reigns and control our journey and not get ahead of ourselves.”

With miles of work still to go, Gough and her teammates continue to chase down the dominant German women who captured the top-two spots on the podium. Tatjana Hüfner claimed her 14th World Cup victory with a time of 1:34.699, while Natalie Geisenberger was second at 1:34.967. Austria’s Nina Reithmayer slid into the bronze-medal position with a time of 1:34.967.

Canada’s Chris and Mike Moffat also continue to find their strength to slide up the World Cup standings after taking the first half of the season off to recover from injuries. The Calgary brothers finished 11th in just their second race of the season in men’s doubles after stopping the clock at 1:34.497.

Christian Oberstolz and Patric Gruber won the men’s doubles race on their home track in Italy after setting the time to beat at 1:33.687. Gerhard Plankensteiner and Oswald Haselrieder, of Italy, were second (1:33.704), while Andris and Juris Sics, of Latvia, grabbed the bronze medal with a time of 1:33.854.

The Luge World Cup continues on Sunday in Cesana, Italy with men’s singles racing.

CANADA’S JEFF CHRISTIE SLIDES INTO 12TH SPOT AT WORLD CUP IN GERMANY

In KÖNIGSSEE, Ger. – Canada’s Jeff Christie finished 12th on one of the toughest tracks on the World Cup luge circuit in Königssee, Germany on Sunday.

The 25-year-old Calgarian, who is ready to be a mainstay with the elite athletes in the world, continues to search for two consistent runs in order to put his name on the World Cup podium for the first time of his career.

Fast and highly-technical, Christie had a strong opening run on the Königssee track which is recognized as the Kitzbuhel venue of luge, but made a costly mistake in his second trip down the track.

“This track is a man track. I am satisfied, but made a couple of key mistakes that cost me,” said Christie, who clocked a two-run time of one minute 35.627 seconds. “The best thing is I know what my mistakes are and know what I need to do to correct them. I have been there in the top-six before and I can consistently be there.’

Christie’s World Cup mates and fellow Calgarians, Sam Edney and Ian Cockerline, also suited up for the first time after the 10-day holiday break. Edney finished 20th at 1:35.901, while Cockerline was 24th (1:36.453).

Italy’s Armin Zöggeler continued his dominance of the World Cup circuit. Zöggeler clocked a winning time of 1:34.458. Germany’s David Möller was second at 1:34.818, while Germany’s Felix Loch rounded out the men’s singles podium in third (1:35.003).

The Canadian Luge Team now head to Cesana, Italy for a World Cup race January 10-11, 2009.

ALEX GOUGH LEADS CANADIAN LUGE ATHLETES WITH NINTH-PLACE SHOWING AT WORLD CUP IN GERMANY

Chris and Mike Moffat finish 10th in return to World Cup doubles racing

KÖNIGSSEE, Ger. – Canada’s Alex Gough picked up where she left off prior to the holiday break leading the nation’s best luge athletes at a World Cup in Germany.

The 21-year-old Calgarian, who is one of the youngest athletes on the World Cup circuit, posted the second top-10 finish of her career when she slid to ninth spot on Saturday in Königssee, Germany. Gough, who drove to her best-ever result during the final race before the holidays where she was seventh in Winterberg, Germany, clocked a two-run time of one minute 36.585 seconds.

“It was another good one for me and I’m pretty happy,” said the 2006 Olympian who is competing in her fourth season on the World Cup. “I have built a lot of confidence from my (seventh-place) result before Christmas knowing that I can be right up there with the top-eight.”

Gough, who is slowly establishing herself as a regular in the top-10, was poised to slide her way further up the standings, but made a costly error in one of the most difficult corners midway down the 11-corner track on her second run.

“While I am happy with my result I did make errors on both runs and know there is room for improvement,” said Gough. “The positive is that this shows me if I do have two consistent runs that my times will be right up there.”

The Canadian Women’s Luge Team also welcomed the return of their leader, Regan Lauscher, back to the World Cup after staying at home for the first half of the schedule to recover from off-season surgery where she had both shoulders repaired.

The two-time Olympian, of Red Deer, Alta., shook off the competitive dust having not competed in a World Cup race in nearly a year, to finish 12th. While the 28-year-old veteran continues to build strength on her starts, Lauscher displayed her sliding strengths in her first race back clocking-in at 1:36.884.

“For sure it was a good start for me, but I have to keep things realistic and continue to work on getting my start back,” said Lauscher. “My focus right now has to be on getting my strength back and be consistent with my sliding. The clock is secondary for me right now.”

The Germans swept the podium in the women’s race. Tatjan Hüfner slid into the winner’s circle with a two-run time of 1:34.948, while Natalie Geisenberger was second (1:35.477), and Anke Wischnewski was third (1:35.712).

Meanwhile, two other Canadians also made their World Cup season debut in Königssee on Saturday. Chris and Mike Moffat suited up for the lone men’s doubles sled, and finished a solid 10th. Training at home in Canada with Lauscher prior to the holidays to allow Chris, the older of the two siblings, to recover from a wrist injury, the brother tandem clocked a combined time of 1:36.055.

“This was a really good start for us and gave us the chance to test my wrist and see how we would come out,” said Chris Moffat, who added the duo’s goal was a top-10 finish. “We pulled the fourth and fifth fastest starts today so it shows everything is okay. I need to keep working on my strength and I still have lots of room to go before getting to the top level.”

The Moffat brothers will be focused on trying to make up nearly half a second on the Germans in order to find their way onto the World Cup podium for the first time of their career. Two German sleds also grabbed the top-two spots on the doubles podium.Germany’s Patrick Leitner and Alexander Resch captured the gold on Saturday with a winning time of 1:34.616, while Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt were second (1:34.686). Austria’s Andreas Linger and Wolfgang Linger were third at 1:34.782.

The Luge World Cup continues on Sunday in Königssee, Germany with men’s singles racing.

Alex Gough Posts Best-Ever Result Finishing Seventh At Luge World Cup In Winterberg

Meaghan Simister pulls new start record en route to 13th-place performance
December 14, 2008

WINTERBERG, Ger. – Canada’s Alex Gough drove to her best-ever result after finishing seventh at the Luge World Cup in Winterberg, Germany on Sunday. The 21-year-old Calgarian, who is competing against athletes nearly 10 years older than her, put together the race of her life by mixing the key ingredients of a winning performance -pulling two solid starts, and completing two consistent runs.

“I am very happy and this feels really good. This is what we try to do every week – have two good starts and two consistent runs,” said Gough, who has historically done well in Winterberg, which is known as a gliders track. “I had been sliding well in training and I knew it was there so I’m happy I was able to pull it off today.”

With few mistakes, but far from perfect, Gough blazed down the hard, slick 15 corners of the Winterberg track in a combined two-run time of one minute 53.271 seconds to crack the top-10 for the first time of her career in an extremely tight women’s field filled with 24 of the worlds’ best luge athletes.

“I always enjoy sliding in Winterberg because it suits me. I think I’m good at just letting the sled run,” said Gough. “We have been doing lots of work on the starts and our constancy, but I definitely can improve on this result because I did still make some mistakes.”

Gough’s previous best World Cup result was an 11th-place finish on her home track in Calgary. Competing in her fourth season on the World Cup, Gough also represented Canada at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games.

Gough was joined in the women’s race by Canada’s powerful Meaghan Simister, who continues to demonstrate to the world’s best luge athletes her explosiveness out of the start handles. The 22-year-old Calgarian set a new start record on the Winterberg track at 4.919 in her first run.

“That first start was absolutely perfect and it was awesome,” said Simister. “It is a little frustrating that I’m fast at the start and still need to gain experience down the track. But it is going to take time and I can’t rush anything.”

The 2006 Olympian finished in 13th spot after clocking-in at 1:53.884. Competing in her fifth season on the World Cup, Simister is knocking on the door of being a regular in the top-10 herself.

“It shows that training hard in the summer will pay off with strong results in the winter,” said Simister. “We are still making mistakes and need to continue trying to be consistent.”

With the leader of the Canadian women’s team, Regan Lauscher, at home recovering from off-season shoulder surgery, Canada’s budding women’s team have been posting some of the best results of their lives in Europe, regularly placing in the top-15, while pushing each other every week.

“This was another solid performance by both of the girls,” said Wolfgang Staudinger, head coach, Canadian Luge Team, who has been preaching the importance of consistency. “This result today, by both of the girls, shows us what we are capable of doing. But we have to continue to work hard week-by-week and need to maximize our training by minimizing our mistakes.”

Regan Lauscher delivered Canada’s best-ever finish on the Luge World Cup in 2005 when she won a silver medal in Lake Placid, N.Y.

While the Canadian women continue to edge their way back to the podium, the German women maintained their dominance of the World Cup by sweeping the top-four spots in standings.

Natalie Geisenberger ended a streak of nine-straight World Cup victories for her teammate Tatjana Hüfner on Sunday. Geisenberger clocked the winning time of 1:52.633, while Hüfner settled for the silver medal at 1:52.729. Anke Wischnewski completed the sweep of the medals for the Germans by finishing third (1:52.894).

The Canadian Luge Team will now return home for the holiday break until the World Cup continues in Königssee, Germany, January 3-4, 2009.

Inconsistency Costs Canadian Luge Athletes at Winterberg World Cup

Tristan Walker and Justin Snith finish fourth in doubles at Junior World Cup
For Immediate Release
December 13, 2008

WINTERBERG, Ger. – A lack of run volume during training week and inconsistency on race day cost Canada’s top men’s luge athletes a spot in the top of the standings at the World Cup in Winterberg, Germany on Saturday. Getting run volume on these tracks is key and without that it is tough to succeed,” said Wolfgang, Staudinger, head coach, Canadian Luge Team, who adds the Canadians get six runs on European tracks each week. “We need to find a way to approach this to be ready or we will always have a tough time on these European tracks because things are not going to change.”

Jeff Christie was the top Canadian in 18th spot with a time of one minute 47.892 seconds, while Sam Edney was 26th (1:48.364) and Ian Cockerline was 30th (1:48.671). The three Calgarians all had moments of brilliance in the final World Cup stop before the holiday break, but fell short of putting it all together. Christie, who pulled starts equal to the leaders on Saturday, was on pace to one of the fastest runs in the second heat when his sled began to skid in the final corner costing him loads of time.

“The positive is the entire team continues to improve,” said Staudinger. “These guys know 100 per cent if they put down their best run they will have no problem cracking the top-10, but we have to be consistent.”

Italy’s Armin Zöggeler is the model of consistency, winning the men’s race with a time of 1:46.490. Germany’s David Möller was second at 1:46.512, while his teammate, Johannes Ludwig, slid to the bronze-medal position on the podium with a time of 1:46.670.

Meanwhile Canada’s junior luge athletes wrapped up a steady first half of the season down the road in Oberhof, Germany on Saturday. Winning two medals in men’s doubles and the team competition already this season, the junior Canucks threatened for the podium again in Oberhof.

Top performances included Calgary’s Tristan Walker and Justin Snith finished fourth in men’s doubles. Elena Corrigal and Kimberley McRae finishing fifth and sixth respectively in the woemn’s Youth A division, while Arianne Jones was seventh and Denae Delcourt eighth in junior women’s action.

The Luge World Cup continues on Sunday in Winterberg, Germany with the women’s race.

CANADA’S LUGE ATHLETES WIN SILVER MEDAL IN TEAM COMPETITION AT JUNIOR WORLD CUP IN GERMANY

Young Canucks enjoy one of best days in history of junior program

KÖNIGSSEE, Ger.-Canada’s junior luge athletes put a silver lining to a stellar day at the Junior Luge World Cup in Königssee, Germany on Friday.

A quartet of Calgary-based athletes, including Tristan Walker, Justin Snith, Stefan Rath and Arianne Jones, teamed up to capture the silver medal in the opening team event of the season after posting a combined-time of two minutes 24.939 seconds.

“It was an awesome day and really cool to be part of this win for Canada,” said Stefan Rath, who drove the men’s singles sled in the team event. “Each one of us had really good runs and we are really happy with our performance.”

In an effort to make luge racing more exciting for teams and spectators, the International Luge Federation introduced the team competition three years ago. Every team consists of a doubles team, one female and one male sled, who each complete one run for a combined final time.

Canada has had success in the team format at the World Cup level, finishing second overall in 2007. The senior team competition consists of a relay-type system that has athletes tagging off on a flag at the finish, which in turn opens the gate at the start for the next team member. Strategy comes into play as the coaches communicate over radio to make sure the next athlete is ready to go as soon as the get opens.

While the Canadians were thrilled with their silver-medal position on the podium on Friday, it was the Germans who embraced the gold medal on their home track with a time of 2:22.721. The Latvians rounded out the podium in third at 2:25.397.

“I was thinking back and I can’t remember a day this good for the junior luge team since 2004 on our home track in Calgary,” said Kyle Connelly, head coach, Canadian Luge Team, and 2002 Olympian. ”As a coach, I couldn’t ask for anything more out of the team. It was a great day and I’m very happy for the athletes.”

While Connelly was pleased with the silver medal, it was the consistent sliding by the young Canucks in the individual racing where they stacked four sleds in the top-10 in junior women’s, youth women’s and doubles competitions that had Canadian luge officials optimistic about the future of the program.

Tristan Walker and Justin Snith, who won a bronze medal two weeks ago together in Italy, held on for a fourth-place finish on the German track in men’s doubles. The Canadian duo posted a time of 1:33.341. The German tandem of Nico Walther and Nico Grünneker took home the gold at 1:32.549.

In junior women’s racing, it was Denae Delcourt and Arianne Jones who put the maple leaf in the top-10. Delcourt was seventh (1:38.829), wile Jones finished 10th (1:39.176). Germany’s Carina Schwab was first at 1:36.281.

In youth A women’s racing, Kimberly McRae narrowly missed the podium in fifth spot after posting a time of 1:35.557. Jordan Smith, of Calgary, was 18th at 1:37.412. Germany’s Aileen Frisch completed the golden sweep for Germany in all divisions with a time of 1:33.698.

“We have a solid mix of athletes at the junior level that are making positive steps forward, which demonstrates a promising future for our program,” said Walter Corey, high-performance director, Canadian Luge Association. “It is nice to see us competitive with the leading countries at the junior level, and we have some strong athletes in the program. But we need to continue to recruit so we have a pool of great athletes to continue to develop through the system.”

The Junior Luge World Cup continues in Königssee, Germany on Saturday.
